Spring bulbs already sprouting!
It’s hard to believe, but the first shoots of snowdrops and crocuses are peeking up in gardens around the neighbourhood, including mine. This photo was taken yesterday afternoon, which you can see was lovely and sunny compared to today’s drizzle and grey. (more…)

Roses in the rose garden at Stanley Park
Sunshine has been so present in Vancouver this fall. A gorgeous September rolled over to a bright, beautiful and mostly dry October and we’re having a very gentle entry into the idea of November as well. Like last weekend. we were out walking the neighbourhood and parks again this week enjoying the fall colour and the sunny skies while they last. (more…)
Cherry blossoms are here
This is the cherry blossom tree blooming outside my bedroom window. A row of these pretty pink trees run along the street in front of our apartment building and I can see them when I wake up every morning and also when I’m working in my little studio (which is not a lot lately since it has been taken over by a tomato grow operation).
Fluffy pink and white trees are flowering all over the city and with crocuses, daffodils and other floral delights popping up everywhere I feel a bit like a princess in a fairytale land. When I’m out walking or in the garden I can see pink petals are floating down from the sky and lying scattered on sidewalks and cars like a dusting of snow. Really, if you’re living in a place that still has actual snow, I don’t understand why. Come join me in lotus land instead.
Crocuses everywhere
A few photos to show you that spring has arrived in Vancouver. Our daily two-block dog walk has turned crocus crazy the past couple of weeks. These pretty purple, white and yellow flowers are everywhere – in gardens, around tree trunks and best of all, littered wildly along the curbs. They are even attracting a few sleepy bees.

Primulas in bloom
Vancouver experienced some very chilly temperatures a couple of weeks ago (even snow!), but luckily my primulas were hardy enough to survive the cold snap. I planted them in early February after seeing them displayed in these gorgeous, colourful rows at my favourite garden centre, Southlands Nursery,
It’s this time of year that makes me love living on the west coast. When we used to live in Victoria I always enjoyed the annual flower count and the bragging rights that come with being the first place in Canada to experience spring. And when I lived in Calgary this is the time of year I hated the most – waiting and waiting for the endless winter to cease.
There were primulas blooming in our tiny garden when we bought our new house here in Vancouver last year. It’s amazing to see them again and think of all the time that has passed and everything that can happen in the short space of a year.
