I planted a handful of tomato seeds about 10 days ago after being inspired by Gayla Trail’s recent post “Tomato Plants Offer Cheap Therapy.” She’s absolutely right about this. Scent is a powerful provoker of memories and emotions, and that smell of warm tomato vines is a such a happy place.

Garden therapy has been a central part of my ‘staying sane’ strategy for a number of years, but I’m still surprised at the sense of peace and well-being I experience as I tend to the tomato seedlings on my studio window sill.

Tomato plants have an amazing smell that brings me to directly to the space in my brain where I store memories of garden-fresh tomato salads enjoyed outdoors on carefree, hot summer days. The sun is present more and more as winter turns to spring, but most days are still grey and drizzly. My little tomato seedlings are growing a tiny bit each day and with that I feel ever closer to believing in the idea of summer again.

The smell of tomato plants, basel, dill and thyme as I brush by them in warm summer weather, the sight of hollyhocks in a garden all whisk my mind back to a time spent with my grand and great grand parents as a young boy in their gardens. Thanks for the reminder.

    Happy spring gardening
